We gathered at an online workshop to combat cancer misinformation!

As CancerDisinfo, we completed our “Online Workshop on Combating Cancer Misinformation for Healthcare Stakeholders” held on 17 November 2025.

We designed this program as a workshop based on mutual learning. Thanks to this collaborative effort strengthened by our participants’ valuable contributions and expertise, we have taken a significant step forward in combating cancer misinformation. We thank all our participants for this fruitful work, which we planned and produced together. 

Key highlights from our workshop

The important topics that emerged from our discussions throughout the workshop and that we should all focus on are as follows: 

• Cancer is becoming more prevalent and ‘younger’: This situation raises the need for access to accurate information and proper guidance. 
• Online misinformation is very high: almost one in three pieces of information about cancer on the internet is incorrect. 
• Misinformation spreads faster online: Misinformation about cancer receives significantly more engagement and spreads rapidly compared to accurate information.
• The solution lies in the interdisciplinary methods: In response to this situation, we need interdisciplinary methods that intersect with fields such as health literacy, cancer health literacy, media literacy and critical thinking. 
• We must ensure continuity: we need to continuously develop and sustain these methods through the working groups and communities that we have established together with experts from various fields, patients, their relatives and caregivers. 
• Health literacy studies are vital when it comes to combatting misinformation in online environments. 

We need community-focused work and radical collaborations. 

As CancerDisinfo, we continue our work with a community – based health literacy model to increase cancer health literacy in online environments and address the information gaps confronting patients and their relatives.

We need more radical collaborations to increase cancer health literacy in online environments, to ensure the spread of accurate information, and to facilitate access to correct knowledge. We must expand the platforms and communities based on collaborative cultures.
